I felt like a worm in a tilled garden. This was so much more exciting that playing alone. And when I looked at her, eyes closed in the sun, her wings spread out across the rocks in graceful arcs, I could not imagine any other creature I’d wish to bond with. She was stunning. As if she heard me, she opened her eyes and chirp-barked.

“Yes, I do think you’re stunning,” I said laughing. “Now what do you say we get out of here?”

We headed back up the hill. I kept our path far from town. What would someone think of a creature like this if they saw her? And then, because everything in Eternal seems ironically connected, I saw the tiny form of a terrified Abra frozen in the path ahead of me.

“Hey Abra,” I said, sympathetically. “Meet my new pet.”
